It feels like a million miles from anywhere but is only a 45-minute drive from Teesside – which is handy as we’d left it too late in the day to go for a walk but not too late to get to Blakey in good time to be fed. The Eskdale is located in the heart of the majestic North York Moors National Park on the banks of the downe arms hotel river Esk, a great northern trout and salmon river. Il Mulino & Hood are two sister restaurants located in the heart of Stokesley. Through centuries of change, The Downe Arms has remained a steadfast gathering place for villagers and visitors alike.

During my recent visit with friends, the staff at The Downe Arms went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time. If you’re looking for a cozy and inviting spot to unwind after exploring the breathtaking North Yorkshire Moors, look no further than The Downe Arms Inn! Had a lovely one night stay at the Downe Arms Inn. Very comfortable and accommodating staff pleasant and friendly, lovely location and the food is great all at a very reasonable price.

There must have been at least 20 pieces of scampi on my plate – it was beautiful. My father-in-law, who without fail will have apple pie for pudding, couldn’t manage a dessert this time and daughter Charlotte, who has a good appetite, didn’t quite manage to get to the end. My favourite visits here have been in the winter when it’s freezing outside and if you are lucky you can sometimes get a table next to one of the roaring coal fires.

Then an announcement was made in November 2020 saying the services of Murray Wilson had been secured and I went from mildly interested to gripped. Attended pub at lunchtime so did not get any idea of alcoholic drinks selection. Even though it was Mother’s Day and all the tables were reserved, the staff were all lovely and fitted us in for fantastic roast dinner and a couple of pints. Popped in after a trip to Runswick bay with the dogs.

Great menu and specials board – we had a fantastic meal. Will be top of our list of places to eat the next time we’re in the area. We’ve dined here on a number of occasions and always enjoy the friendly & attentive service.

Between us, we’ve run everything from bustling city hotels to cosy countryside retreats, and we’ve poured that experience (and a fair bit of our hearts) into The Downe Arms Inn.​ Nestled in the heart of the North Yorkshire countryside, The Downe Arms Inn is a traditional country inn offering warm hospitality, freshly prepared food, and comfortable accommodation. Whatever time of day it is when I see those first few flakes I have to get my wellies on and get out in it.”… “Well it’s everyone’s dream isn’t it, to get stranded inside a pub.” What they don’t know is that when the snow comes down, he gets out the paintbrushes and everyone is expected to join in with the decorating.

But the main bonus for us today was how lovely the staff were with our 4 month old puppy. They’ve created a comfortable country pub with fabulous food – there’s an easy charm about the place you don’t often get with a menu of this calibre, and that’s one of the hardest things to pull off. The tasting menu will set you back £45 for five courses, or just swing by for lunch, which includes the likes of Yorkshire pigeon with beets, endive and walnut (£10) and the Eskdale Burger with triple cooked chips.

It boasts a blessedly unreconstructed menu of which the star is undoubtedly the homemade pie of the day. “We hope to be here for a long time” Barry added, and there is no doubt in the minds of all who meet them that the contented Crosslands are literally on top of the world.
